The Benefits Of Residential Flood Barriers
Door flood barriers are used throughout the world. They are distinct and unique in their purpose and design. Some of the gates are used to control small amounts of water using mitered barriers. Other gates are used to control massive volumes of water and protect property and people.
Other barriers are used to divert water on dams. Many dams have radial or fuse gates. Radial gates move automatically when water reaches a certain level in a dam and releases water under the sensor is lowered to the range that is safe for the dam. When there is a need for water from the dam, the barrier can be activated manually from a control room that is built within the dam.
Fuse gates do not allow for the kind of control that other barriers offer. They are often installed on the top of dams and waterways as a “stop gap” when other control measures fail. The gates are designed to slow the flow of water over a dam or waterway.
The improvement and development of mobile flood gates has grown to include protection of major cities. These gates are versatile and functional. When water is encroaching from the ocean, the gates are lowered on a feeder river or major waterway to block the flow of water into the city.
The barriers are controlled from towers that overlook the home flood barriers. When installed on a major river, they can be activated when the river begins to rise. Water can rise to a specified level before the barrier stops the flow of water. This keeps the city from flooding.
The use of these barriers to stop encroachment of the sea on major cities has been used since 1982. As more cities have been threatened by seawater flooding, the use of the barriers has increased.
There are some concerns by marine biologists regarding the continuous use of these types of mobile barriers to protect cities. One argument against mobile barriers is that the exchange of water providing important nutrients to sea life is reduced or stopped when the gates are activated.
The mobile barriers stop the flow of water, but do not have the ability to utilize the water for hydro-energy. This has caused some concern as cities that require the use of the mobile gates often have a tremendous need for fuel.
The size of the mobile barriers varies. In some areas they are used on a feeder river and require space that would otherwise be used by ships. This reduces the ability of docks to generate revenue on those docks.
The barriers are activated on a daily basis in some cities where they are anchored in the ocean. These cities are endangered due to encroachment of rising water levels in the ocean. When the tide rises, the barriers are activated via a radio transmission. This action is resulting in further research on the effects to micro-organisms and sea life in the ocean surrounding the cities.
The use of flood control barriers in and around cities that are located near large bodies of water will continue as water levels rise. When the flood barriers are designed and planned it takes up to twenty years for the gates to be completed and functional. The concern of science and industrialists is that this span of time makes the mobile barriers outdated before they are completed.
